Program services:

2. Guidance and Orientation Programs for New Students

(Include only the exceptional needs offered to the students of the program that differ from those provided at the institutional level).

The department of MIS and the college organize some events for all first-semester and transfer students. This helps in preparing for the required transition into college life as well as the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead—intellectually, emotionally, academically, and socially. These events are conducted in the early weeks of every semester. Head of the department, senior faculty members conduct orientation sessions for the new students.

Usually, prior to the start of classes, an academic orientation is scheduled for all new students to acquaint them with the general department, college, and university academic regulations, policies and services. During the orientation programs, the department of MIS arranges an agenda in coordination with the various academic and support committees to provide an introduction to student’s rights and responsibilities, as well as university life through campus tours and visits, meetings, lectures, demonstrations and other activities.

Importantly, attendance of the students are mandatory for all new students. Students’ attendance and participation is noted in the department records. In case of absence, additional sessions will have to be scheduled ensuring that each and every new student has participated in these programs.

These events define the components and standards of student’s orientation at the department. Further, these events involve new students, graduates and undergraduates, as well as targeted orientation programs tailored throughout the semesters to regulate topics of particular interest related to campus opportunities, code of conduct, and others.

Orientation agenda:

  • The MIS department discusses the core of the curriculum, syllabi, attendance policy, advisor, academic support, and the responsible persons in the department for various services.
  • Provides general guidelines, calendar, tips, important registration information, regarding different events and policies.
  • Counsels about wellness, services, academic and personal support, excuse letter terms and conditions, and first-semester survival tips.
  • Guides about the facilities and resources.

3. Student Counseling Services

(Academic, professional, psychological and social)

(Include only the exceptional needs offered to the students of the program that differ from those provided at the institutional level).

Several committees from the department of MIS, college, and university coordinate to conduct the counselling services.

Counselling services agenda:

  • The MIS department discusses the core of the curriculum, syllabi, attendance policy, advisor, academic support, and the responsible persons in the department for various services.
  • Provides general guidelines, calendar, tips, and important registration information, regarding different events and policies.
  • Counsels about wellness, services, academic and personal support, excuse letter terms and conditions, and first-semester survival tips.

4. Special Support

(Low achievers, disabled, gifted, and talented students).

The first year of the program includes 2 intensive courses of English, 2 courses in mathematics, and 2 courses in computer science. This year prepares students to complete the program with required skills. Academic Advisors as well as the Unit of Students’ Guidance and Counseling at the college, in which there is a representative from MIS department, provides their services to those students who need the support in different students’ affaires. In some cases, the unit coordinates with the Center of Students’ Guidance and Counseling at the Deanship of Students Affaires in the university to provide the needed support as specified in the related rules and regulations applied in KKU.

As per the policy of university, the college has established a unit of Students’ Guidance and Counselling. In the department level, Students Affaires and Academic Advisory Committee have been formed to support students and decide in the related issues. Furthermore, each faculty member has been assigned a specific number of students registered on a particular semester; as an academic advisor. The advisors hold the responsibility of guiding the students to all their academic needs. This information is available online (detailed and specific information on the registration portal) for both concerns. Also, teaching staff members are required to determine office hours and support their students. They have to announce that to students at the beginning of the semester and they must be available during that time.

The whole process is in line with the university Students' Guidance and Counselling Center at the Deanship of Students Affairs and is implemented according to the respective policies of MOE.

F. Learning Resources, Facilities, and Equipment:

1. Learning Resources

Learning resources required by the Program (textbooks, references, and e-learning resources and web-based resources, etc.)

At the beginning of every academic year, the department asks the faculty members regarding the update of the course learning resources: Textbooks, reference books (both hard copies and electronic form), and online resources. Accordingly, faculty members submit the required to head of the department to complete the necessary requirements regarding the acquisition and approval.

For any new learning resource, such as textbooks, learning materials, and electronic resources requirements the department follows the following procedures:

Based on the collected requirements from the faculty members, the department forwards the requirements to the curriculum committee for revision. In response to the committee recommendations, the course specification must be updated by the faculty members and submitted to the department council for approval. Then the process of acquisition starts for the required learning resources. The approved requirements are then forwarded to the concerned authority at the college to take the necessary action. Based on the requirements, the concerned authority provides the books to the college library. Apart from the college library, faculty members as well as students may borrow the books from the university's central library. Above all, the university has access to the Saudi Digital Library, and this facility has access to authenticated users. The collected data is forwarded to the concerned authority by requesting the nature and priority of the requirement.

  • Reviewing journals, surfing the Web, and visiting specialized bookstores to look for the latest academic materials.
  • Recommendations by department meetings such as the Committee of Curriculum & Study Plans or AD&Q.
  • Benchmarking with similar programs in different universities worldwide.
  • Comparing the existing resources with the required ones and then following the procedures.

2. Facilities and Equipment

(Library, laboratories, classrooms, etc.)

The department follows a systematic procedure to obtain all the academic requirements by following the university guidelines, mentioned as follows:

Faculty members should determine the required resources for teaching their courses such as classrooms, laboratories including Hardware, Software, and other physical infrastructure. Therefore, they have to submit them to the head of the department to complete the necessary actions for the acquisition.

At the end of each semester, a survey (questionnaire) is conducted among the students asking about learning resources and facilities. This activity is usually carried out by the AD&Q unit at the college level. The department quality committee facilitates this process according to the requirements.

3. Procedures to ensure a healthy and safe learning environment

(According to the nature of the program)

According to the nature of MIS program, it doesn’t require any specific safety measures. The department follows the university standard guidelines as mentioned below:

As per the policy of the university, the college has established a unit of Students’ Guidance and Counselling. At the department level, the Students Affairs and Academic Advisory Committee has been formed to support students and deal with related issues. Furthermore, each faculty member has been assigned a specific number of students registered on a particular semester; for student counselling. The faculty members perform as advisors and hold the responsibility of guiding the students to all their academic needs. This information is available online (a detail and specific information on the registration portal) for both concerns.
